A Spoonful of Sugar Helps The Medicine Go Down

Mary Poppins was definitely onto something when it came to getting kids to take their medicine with a spoonful of sugar. I mean who doesn’t love sugar?

We love sugar so much that did you know that the average american consumes approximately 19-22 teaspoons of added sugar every single day? That equals out to being about 66 -70 pounds of sugar a year. For 1 person! Wow, thats a lot of sugar!! And that’s just the average american. There are a ton of people that eat much more than that.

Most people are getting added sugars in their diet without even knowing it. Refined sugar is in everything. And I mean everything!! Things that make no sense as to why sugar is even in it.

The food industry had become very sneaky about their labeling. Here is a list of terms they use in disguise:

-Evaporated Cane Juice, Cane Crystals, Cane Sugar

-Brown Rice Syrup, Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup Solids, High Fructose Corn Syrup

-Anhydrous Dextrose, Crystal Dextrose,

-Brown Sugar

-Corn Sweetener, Fructose Sweetener,

-Fruit Juice Concentrates

-Honey,

-Liquid Fructose, Fructose, Lactose, Malltose

-Malt Syrup, Maple Syrup, Pancake Syrup, Molasses

It’s a lot, isn’t it?

Last year I went on a special cleansing diet for 3 months which included cutting out all refined sugars. This was a real eye opener to me. I just assumed this meant cutting out the desserts like ice cream, cookies, cakes, and maybe certain types of breads. It turned out to be so much more than that.

I began flipping over and reading all of the ingredients listed on everything I was buying. Almost all condiments, sauces, and salad dressing contained refined sugars. Wraps, yogurts, and just about anything that came in a package was also in the same boat.

Why is this necessary?

Next I thought, ok so the more healthy low fat, fat free options should be ok, right? Wrong!! They were actually worse!! Can you image? I later learned that by removing all the fat to supposedly make them healthier, it made them taste like cardboard so they pumped everything full of refined sugar to make it taste good.

So why is it in just about everything we buy that isn’t grown in the ground?

Bottom line is BECAUSE IT’S ADDICTIVE! Research has shown that it actually stimulates the same pleasure centers of the brain as cocaine and heroin. Making it just as addicting.

So they know if they keep feeding you sugar, you will keep coming back for more, because your body will be telling you you need it.

Pretty scary right! Refined sugars have also been linked to causing diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, as well as obesity.

I personally believe that cutting way back or cutting out completely refined sugars of your diet is one of the most important things you can do to get healthy. There are plenty of other foods you can eat to satisfy that sweet tooth with naturally occurring sugars that are so much better for your body. Like a nice big bowl of fresh fruit.

It will not be the easiest thing to do. You are likely to experience withdrawal symptoms like headaches, irritability, depression, hunger and cravings, and low energy.

But I firmly believe you can do it! It’s worth it!
