Matcha for Diabetes


 

How much do you know about Diabetes?

I must admit myself that I don’t know a whole lot. I have read about it, and know the basic info., but what I didn’t realize is how much of an actual epidemic it has become among Americans.

I was recently contacted by one of our Matcha Lovers, and she brought up something that I never really thought to shed light on before. I will share with you some of her email to me later.

Surely you can put 2 and 2 together and figure out our discussion was about diabetes. I was intrigued by what she had to say and immediately dove right in to see what all I could find to expand my knowledge on the topic.

Through my research I was amazed to uncover some very encouraging information on how matcha helps with not only with preventing diabetes, but also helping alleviate symptoms and potential issues for those already diagnosed.

Of course I will elaborate on my findings, but first this is what I discovered about the disease in general. All information I think everyone should know about.

As reported by the American Diabetes Association 29.1 MILLION Americans suffer from Diabetes. Holy Cow! That equals out to be 1 in every 11 people.

 Even a little more surprising is that 1 in 4 people don’t even know they have it.

Sorry to say that’s not the worst part I discovered. Brace yourself!

86 MILLION American Adults have pre-diabetes which is = to 1 in every 3 adults. Unfortunately what makes this statistic even worse is that 9 out of 10, don’t know that they have it either. 

I want to pretense this next section by telling you that I’m not trying to scare you by sharing this information that I have discovered. I just really think it is important for you to know the severity of this disease. 

I promise, there is much better news coming up after this “Debbie Downer” talk. Stay with me.

So lets get on with it.

Also reported by the American Diabetes Association, is the following serious threats to your health associated with diabetes.

They indicate that the risk for “loss of life” in adults is increased by 50% for those with diabetes than those who do not have the disease.

Also presented are the other serious risks to health, such as:

-Blindness

-Kidney Failure

-Heart Disease

-Stroke

-Loss of toes, feet or legs

I know, I know, not so great to think about, but very important for us to be informed of in order to get the whole picture.

There are 2 types of Diabetes. I will break it down very simply for ya.

Type 1, which is where the body cannot make enough insulin*

Type 2, where your body can not properly use insulin*

*Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that allows your body to use sugar (glucose) from carbohydrates in the food that you eat for energy or to store glucose for future use. Insulin helps keeps your blood sugar level from getting too high (hyperglycemia) or too low (hypoglycemia)  (Definition by www.endocrineweb.com)

Type 1 Diabetes can develop at any age, and currently conventional medicine knows of no way to prevent it.

Type 2 Diabetes can also develop at any age, but the good news is that it a majority of cases, it can be prevented.

Yippee!!!

Finally, a little encouragement here, right?

So let’s take a quick look at type 2’s risk factors.

The most prevalent include:

-Being Overweight

-Having a Family History

-Having Diabetes While Pregnant (Gestational Diabetes)

Ok, so now that we know the main contributing factors, what are they saying that helps prevent us from getting this expensive disease?

And by expensive, I mean expensive! $$$

We are talking $245 BILLION Buck-er-oo’s in medical costs, and lost work and wages for those diagnosed.

To put that into a little bit of a better perspective for ya,  it pretty much represents medical costs being twice as high for people with diabetes then people that do not have it.

A few simple strategies to prevent or at the very, very minimum delay type 2 is:

-Maintain a Healthy Weight (Loose those extra pounds)

-Eat Healthy

-Get Some Exercise

To be honest with ya, I think there is more that can be done, than their 3 suggestions.

With matcha of course!

Here’s where the good stuff starts.

In article after article, and study after study I have found indicates that matcha definitely has some pretty amazing qualities that contribute to prevention and treatment of diabetes.

 

Here is an outline of my top findings:

Prevention:

  • The potent content of antioxidants found in matcha contribute to making it an excellent preventative beverage not only for diabetes but also for other diseases such as cancer, and heart disease.
  • According to a study conducted in Japan, people who drank six or more cups of green tea daily were 33% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than people who drank just one cup per week.

Thankfully with Matcha being a much more potent form of green tea we can cut that ratio down to 2-3 cups per day!

  • Another study showed that people, who drank green tea consistently, had lower body fat levels.

This supports the suggestions made by the American Diabetes Association that I mentioned above about loosing weight.

Management:

  • Matcha is rich in EGCG catechins (a form of antioxidant) which contributes to stopping the development of softening of the vascular muscles caused by high glucose levels.

EGCG also helps to improve glucose tolerance, and makes improvements to the metabolism. In turn the storage of fat in the body is reduced.

And… reduces fatty degeneration of the pancreas

  • Studies indicate that matcha green tea consumption is associated with decreasing fasting glucose levels, and reduced fasting insulin levels. Both which are measured in a diabetics health.
  • Safely lowers cholesterol levels and prevents liver and kidney disease
  • Suppresses hyperglycemia(high blood sugar) and insulin resistance by slowing down the effects of glucose
  • Reduces oxidative stress and decreases cardiovascular side-effects

If you ask me, it seems like matcha has a lot to offer those who are at high risk of getting diabetes and for those who already have it.

Since diabetes is on the rise, I think it’s best to do what we can to prevent the onset. It seems so easy just to drink a cup or 2 of matcha every day and contribute to significantly reducing our risks.

If you add in a little brisk exercise and clean up your diet, it’s even better! Just astonishing at how simple it really is for us to prevent such a life threatening condition.

One last thing to consider. Remember the info. I stated above about the $245 Billion?

That makes spending a few extra dollars on matcha a drop in the bucket.

Let’s think about this, contribute to billions of dollars spent on medical care, or spend $14.99 a month for the rest of my life?

Last but not least to add to all the already amazing research I discovered, this is the email I received that prompted me to dive into this research.

I think the tea is great. Very top quality as far as I can tell. My father was recently diagnosed with Type II Diabetes and I stumbled across this article. I don’t know if you have seen it. Since he has been drinking Matcha tea on a daily basis, he has had a major reduction in leg pain (neuropathy) and is therefore able to sleep better at night. Might be useful to spread the word.
