WHAT IS SENCHA GREEN TEA?

Sencha is the most widely consumed dried leaf green tea in all of Japan.

There are several grades of sencha which are characterized by the techniques used during the growing process, the type of leaves, and time that they are harvested.

The most delicious and notable of the varieties is called Shincha (which means "new tea"). Shincha is a 1st harvest Sencha Green Tea comprised of the young, new leaves of the camellia sinensis plant and picked in early spring.

These tender new leaves contain the highest concentrations of nutrients making it an extremely beneficial tea to drink for your health.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SENCHA GREEN TEA?

Japanese Sencha in loose leaf form has such a wide array of health-enhancing benefits to offer. It is minimally processed and only lightly steamed to preserve it's potent healing properties.

Sencha's nutritional profile consists of:

-Antioxidants (protects your cells from damage that causes disease)
-Catechins (lots of EGCG- a type of antioxidant)
-Saponins (antimicrobial - protects your body from fungi, bacteria, and viruses)
-Folic Acid (makes red blood cells, repairs DNA and RNA)
-Phosphorus (repairs damaged cells and tissues)
-Beta-Carotene (converts to vitamin A in the body- needed for healthy skin, mucous membranes, and immune system)
-Vitamin C (a potent antioxidant with multiple benefits)
-Potassium (controls nerve signals, muscle contractions, and balances body fluid)
-Calcium (builds bones, clots blood, contracts muscles, beats heart)

Wow, right? A lot of important support that our bodies need to function can be found in a simple cup of Sencha Green Tea. Pretty amazing stuff!

But what can all of these nutrients do for you that you can actually notice in some way shape or form?

Here's what they can do:

-Help to protect against cancer
-Lower Blood Pressure
-Reduce Bad Cholesterol (LDL)
-Stimulate the Mind
-Rev up the Metabolism
-Boost Energy
-Enhance the Immune System
-Promote anti-aging of the skin
-Improve Oral Health

I don't know about you... but I love every benefit on that list ♥

SENCHA TEA CAFFEINE

Yes, green teas naturally contain caffeine.

But it's in relatively low amounts and even those who have caffeine sensitivities seem to be able to tolerate at least 1 cup a day without any issues. (but it varies from person to person)

One 8oz cup of sencha usually contains about 20-25mg of caffeine. That's about 10mg lower than matcha and less than half of what is in an 8oz cup of coffee.

Also worth mentioning is the caffeine in green tea is not the same kind of caffeine that is found in coffee. This is due to something called L-theanine. A naturally occurring component only found in tea that when combined with caffeine mellows out the effects by providing an entirely different flow of energy.

Most people report feeling calm, yet alert at the same time without the jittery and heart-pounding side effects.

SIDE EFFECTS OF SENCHA

When it comes to the side effects of drinking sencha green tea there really is not much to report.

It is possible for some people to experience an upset stomach. This is usually easy to fix by eating while drinking your cup of tea or by not drinking it on an empty stomach, like first thing in the AM.

Because green tea does contain caffeine if you drink it in large quantities or too late in the day, it may disrupt your sleep patterns just like any other caffeinated beverage.

Other than that... most people experience positive effects.

WHAT DOES SENCHA TASTE LIKE?

Japanese Sencha overall has a very light and smooth flavor. Slightly vegetal tasting, but extremely palatable.

It is possible to experience slightly bitter end notes with Japanese Sencha. If you are careful with your water temperatures and lessen the number of leaves per brew, you can reduce the astringent taste if desired.

If at first, you don't succeed... try, try again.

With a little experimentation, you will find the perfect combination that works for you. Also, sencha is incredibly delicious with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a touch of honey.
